The project

Harking back to...

As early as 1898, the people of Brest were able to get from one quarter to another more easily thanks to the tramway. It went down to the harbor in the Penfeld river, climbing up to hilly Saint-Pierre and all the way out to the small coastal town of Le Conquet. That tramway was destroyed during the Second World War, but post-war trolley-buses remained in service until the late 1960s.

In 1986, the Urban council Chairman Georges Lombard launched the tramway project, but the negative outcome of the 1990 referendum completely sidetracked the idea.

In 2001, light rail was put back on the agenda of Brest Métropole Océane's projects. Following feasibility studies, the Urban community council of BMO voted on December 17, 2004 to adopt the principle of the East-West starting line of the Tramway. Since then, the project has entered its operational phase and delivery is slated for June 2012.
